Apple released the eagerly anticipated iOS 5 beta this week and apart from the well publicised improvements to the notification centre, camera, etc they’ve also enabled playback of the Canon MOV file type without the need to jailbreak!. The photo app now imports the videos directly from the Canon 7D to the iPad using the USB Camera Connection Kit. The video below shows the process of connecting the camera to the iPad, downloading the movie file and play back. Although not perfect it’s a step in the right direction – especially given the fact that I’m still using the first generation iPad.
Update – iOS 5 Beta 2
The latest release from Apple not only brings the Wi-Fi syncing feature but has also improved the rendering and playback of the Canon MOV files. With Beta 2 the thumbnails of the movies are now rendered and playback is full screen.
The restriction with iMovie remains – it can’t deal with non iPhone/iPad shot video.

Hi Alex, No. iOS 5 Beta 3 still imports the videos but crashes trying to import the RAW files.
