How to transfer movies and photos from iPhone to iPad for use within iMovie

The iPhone connected to the iPad using the standard USB cable and Camera Connection Kit

After messing around with various cameras, file formats and a number of iOS apps to transfer compatible movies onto the iPad I took a step back.  Pretty much everything I’ve tried indicates that iMovie will generally only work with footage from either the new iPad 2 or from the iPhone 4/3GS.  Although PhotoSync is a great app, it’s dependent on either wifi or (slow) bluetooth.

While charging my iPhone I realised that it’s cable is a bog standard USB lead – one which fits into the Camera Connection Kit.  Could it be that easy?  Yes, it is.  To get photos and video off the iPhone and into the iPad simply plug the iPhones USB lead into the CCK attached to you iPad and hey presto – the files speed themselves over!

Then, as long as you’ve installed iMovie using the iPhone Configuration Utility, iMovie recognises all the files and off you go. (Follow the instructions from Wired)  Obviously you could use iMovie on the iPhone but if you have and iPad with you the the extra screen size makes things much easier!
